Sunday Treat

After four weeks of non carb/ low carb diet which mainly comprised of salads and likes DH was complaining about food….and a red light  went beep inside my head…..first signs of giving up!!!! I realize this is the kind of life style we have to maintain for his healthy heart and our lives and it is true that salads and bland food does get boring after a while so  there I was staring at the kitchen cabinets to find something interesting to make ….saw some canned tuna and I always have halloumi cheese in my refrigerator as my replacement for Paneer  because it is unavailable in this part of the world. This happened with these two as the main ingredients…

Tuna halloumi fish cake


  • 2 large pieces of Chunk light meat tuna in spring water
  • 100g halloumi cheese
  • One medium size onion
  • 2 cloves of Garlic
  • 1 inch ginger root
  •  Few sprigs of parsley or cilantro
  • 3 pods of cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder
  • 1/2tsp of black pepper powder
  • 2 green olives with red pepper (optional)

To shallow fry

  • 1egg beaten and kept in a medium sized bowl.

  • 4 tbsp of Flax seed powdered kept ready in a flat plate. This ingredient is optional one may also use bread crumbs. Flax seeds are great for omega 3 and extra fibre and an extremely healthy part of low carb food.

  • 1tbsp oil to shallow fry.


  • Grind all of the above ingredients in a blender

This is how it looks,


  • Make medium sized balls and flatten them between the palms to make cakes.

  • In a medium bowl beat one large egg with a pinch of salt.

  • On a flat plate sprinkle flax seeds powder and add to it a pinch of salt and mix.

  • Keep it in the following order while the oil gets heated in a flat skillet(tawa)


  • Dip one  cake in the beaten egg and immediately roll it in flax seed powder( or bread crumbs ) and then straight to the hot oil in the skillet.

  • Shallow fry for  2 min on each side. 1 tbsp oil is required to fry two fish cakes.


You can serve them with any sauce.

I like mine with my favorite sauce in the world ” kasundi” a Bengali mustard sauce, a bit of Heinz chilli garlic sauce and slices of cucumber and onions at the side. 🙂

Delicious mouth watering snack or lunch for all of us who are into low carb food or for that matter any foodie.

 I ran the recipe through a site that calculates calories(I found this really exciting!) of your new recipes and as expected came out with the following, ie very low on carb and high on protein and also with lots of other goodness.

I guess with all those spices even non fish eater might like this one. You can also replace halloumi cheese with our good old paneer and may be use some other light flaky fish … go explore or just try this one!
