The ‘Bong’ behind the blog

Hello!!!! A warm welcome to all my readers and others who are visiting my blog.

I’d like to think I am a creative soul who needs to express creativity irrespective of any form….like learnt music for major part of my life, is a natural when it comes to dancing,  was teaching little children which took enormous creativity,  so I am kind a jack of all trades…and u know the rest. But what I only realised now  that  the creativity that goes in cooking was taken for granted (by me) all this time and now I wanted to document it somewhere to have a point of reference  handy for later when I try to cook something that I  did say a month back. Here I must mention that cooking is something that I thoroughly enjoy but never have had any kind of formal training not even from my mom….so do overlook if the there are any faux pas in the technical jargon anytime..

I am one of those kinds who can’t follow recipes to the T..especially the recipes that are from a different cuisine I tend to improvise to suit our Bengali or bong palate.

Now lets see why the blog is named so…. ‘Bong’ coz i am a bengali at my core….although i am a second generation Prabashi bengali (that is my father came out of west bengal for career sake and went back only after his retirement) we were born and brought up outside bengal. I had to state a bit of the background coz although our parents called themselves bengali or bangali  we kids called ourselves “bongs” coz that was in fashion or was considered modern (with time!!) when we were growing up and now it has become a modern nomenclature for all Bengalis at least in India… but still why does that figure on my blog name…..well like I mentioned although the upbringing happened outside the state our parents kept us rooted culture wise …and if you are a bong you would  know that food plays an intricate part in not only our  culture But who we are…..Through food a bong  expresses most of his /her emotions…a bong lady shows all her love towards her spouse and kids through food by virtue of cooking and feeding different dishes and for a bong man the quality and variety of fish that he brings to the table everyday can pretty much be a great source of pride and achievement. Yes we love our food almost obsess with it… there is a different tempering for almost every dish, we dice our veggies differently for different dishes, a bong mom  will have a million different ways of cooking her macher jhol ie fish broth, she would know which food is high on nutrition, growth and brains. Thus the concept of chanar mishty…i.e. sweets made of cottage cheese for their high nutritive value and so on..well I am all of that but also may be because we were exposed to different cultures and cuisine  I have developed a knack for experimenting with the food that I cook…so although I do enjoy the different dishes from other cuisines but when they are tried in my kitchen I tend to incorporate the bong ness in it which turns into a signature dish most of the time…..this I do by combining the different ingredients especially the spices…so when I had to name the blog couldn’t find a more appropriate name than ” bong ( in me) comb(inations)”

Music and the love for food rather the creativity involved in both these fields completely satiates my calling. A student of life I believe in being conscious and aware of each experience while its taking place and writing about it makes the experience complete in my head.  Therefore it is my pleasure to pen down these recipes and the stories behind them and will always feel honoured just knowing that someone might be reading this!!!!

I am a teacher turned stay at home mom reliving my childhood with my three-year old toddler and living with the most kind and caring hubby who encourages me in all my productive endeavours. While cooking I am always conscious of the nutritive aspect of the dish which I am going to feed my family with. I always try to give them a whole and balanced meal and while doing so often a novel dish gets created which I intend to share with you  through this blog!

So food and cooking, music and literature all these attributes of my being will be reflected in this blog from time to time.
